The Great Chevelle Decal Project

As I work to restore my Oshawa built, 1970 Chevelle SS396 I have been researching all of those small finishing details which make historically accurate restoration. As an professional Art Director and Graphic Designer, I have been thoroughly disgusted by what is currently being mass produced and sold as “correct” detailing items like engine bay and other decals. Aside from the absolutely horrible production and blotchy printing, I came to realize that these “correct” detail items look nothing like the original examples.

Initially I started this project to make my car as good as it could be, but in the process I’ve discovered a lot of surviving examples that are appropriate to the sisters of my car, built with other options and at other plants throughout the 1970 model year.

All of these reproductions were created with well documented surviving examples, that were photographed and measured to ensure their authenticity. The surviving examples were used as a layout guide to match fonts, font sizes, letterspacing, line spacing, and yes… even the typos as found originally.
