Website Design and Template Coding for the IMF

Annual Meeting Registration Website

Problem

The original site was a collection inconsistent pages, born from multiple programmers with little UX or design background. No two pages were alike and all were very awkward to use. I was tasked with creating a beautiful, consistent & user friendly page design.

Solution

Using what I know about HTML and CSS, I designed and coded a few key html pages with CSS rules. This handful of pages showed how to present and code a wide variety of pages and items like tables and forms. The template pages were handed off to developers for the complete site blow out. Live pages are not available to the public, but the following links are a few of the templates I delivered to the programmers:

A favorite detail of mine from this project is a CSS-based drop down menu. Very little programming was needed under the hood.

The IMF’s Managing Director, Christine Lagarde, wanted an interactive graphic to show the progress of key HR initiatives for broadcast to the IMF’s rank and file via their intranet. As each initiative progresses, as defined by their sub-initiatives, the tree fills out with its color-coded leaves.

Being animated and interactive was a key request, however there are major drawbacks to using Flash in a case like this. Highest on the list is the ease and cost of constantly updating the file to always show up-to-date information. I have seen first hand the difficulties of updating a Flash file repeatedly. It can produce work load stress on a department as well as potentially corrupt or break a previously working iteration.

My solution to these pain-points for this graphic was to utilize an external data file. Such a file can be easily edited using any text or word processing program, no Flash experience needed. That means quick, easy, and instant changes done, to any of the key variables to update the graphic’s appearance, at the client's fingertips.

The working graphic shown here is a remote instance, not the IMF’s live graphic, which resides on their intranet.

Valentines Day Poster - IMF Cafeteria for the International Monetary Fund

I truly enjoyed my time freelancing for the IMF. The work was varied, ranging from very cerebral coding/programing challenges to pure design. Here is a poster designed for the IMF Washington DC Headquarter's cafeteria to promote a special fresh pasta station. Who doesn't love fresh pasta?

This project harkens back to my illustration beginnings, with its ability to deliver a larger idea quickly with a single image. My advertising career hasn't afforded me with much of this pure simple pleasure, so it was a joy to conceive and design it for the IMF.

Book Cover Illustrations for the International Monetary Fund

Book covers were among the prized gigs when I was an Illustration student. It is a fun problem-solving exercise to visually sum up a book in a single, striking image. These covers were also a an exercise in expediency and frugality: combine a few pieces of stock art with some custom made art digitally to tell your story… and we need it now.
