Brochure for The Paralyzed Veterans of America

Cover

I was asked to design a brochure for the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) that would be a showcase of good work the PVA has done. The tone of the piece speaks with thanks to donators past and present and looks forward to donators yet to come.

My Mission

Armed with brand guidelines, a rough outline, and a staggering amount of imagery I set out to tell a story about an organization with which I had only just become acquainted. The goal was to be bold, using easy to read facts to quickly paint a big picture. And what better way to back up facts than with strong, powerful imagery? Highlighting the main goals and pillars of the PVA, this piece gives the reader a quick and comprehensive overview of PVA's legislative and legal advocacy, employment assistance, and many levels of other support for America's disabled veterans and their caregivers.

Start to finish, this 20 page brochure was created in a week's time. It was received by the leadership with overwhelming enthusiasm.

This brochure is both one of my most challenging and memorable projects for my time at NASA Headquarters. It proves the point to me (and every design teacher I've ever had) that visual communication is all about organization and hierarchy. It took a lot of back and forth work with the client to understand what they thought was important and to balance it all in a clean concise final product.

The final format was an 11x17" sheet tri-folded. In the end, it was very well received by its ultimate audience, members of the House and Senate of the United States Congress.

NASA - Domestic Violence Posters

While concepting this project I realized that there are many permutations of what can be considered domestic violence. It bothered me that the stock art I was perusing was very heavily husband on wife oriented. I sought a way to be ambiguous and to tell a larger story.

The image below is arresting and visceral, but it is also open-ended.

The image below was an alternate concept from the same project. I liked that it symbolizes the repercussions of domestic violence rather than the physical acts.

NASA - Trip Book Covers

Travel is a part of many businesses, and NASA isn't an exception. Trip Books are basically itineraries of where to go, who to meet and when to be there. While mostly a templated and easy to produce product, these trip books covers provide a nice touch of design and customized, trip-relevant imagery.

A more generic cover. The purpose of travel wasn't disclosed, so imagery of the target location was selected, as seen from the International Space Station at night. Hard to beat photo resources like this!

Various Letters and Emails for Pfizer's XELJANZ

We did a number of different direct mail and email to cover the different marketing tactics (acquisition, conversion, etc.) for Pfizer's XELJANZ product. Whether the goal was for lead generation for the direct mail channel, incentive to convert to product use, or other goals, the communication and especially the call to action must always be clear and at the forefront.

Best practices

The driving purpose behind these letters and emails was to initiate a response. The calls to action are consistently prominent, towards the top of the layout. Always remember, you have seconds to make an impression (if you're lucky), so don't bury the ultimate goal.

Valentines Day Poster - IMF Cafeteria for the International Monetary Fund

I truly enjoyed my time freelancing for the IMF. The work was varied, ranging from very cerebral coding/programing challenges to pure design. Here is a poster designed for the IMF Washington DC Headquarter's cafeteria to promote a special fresh pasta station. Who doesn't love fresh pasta?

This project harkens back to my illustration beginnings, with its ability to deliver a larger idea quickly with a single image. My advertising career hasn't afforded me with much of this pure simple pleasure, so it was a joy to conceive and design it for the IMF.

Book Cover Illustrations for the International Monetary Fund

Book covers were among the prized gigs when I was an Illustration student. It is a fun problem-solving exercise to visually sum up a book in a single, striking image. These covers were also a an exercise in expediency and frugality: combine a few pieces of stock art with some custom made art digitally to tell your story… and we need it now.

Miscellaneous Print Pieces for Compaq

Very early in my career I was mentored by a wonderful Creative Director. She taught me the importance a client's brand and that each piece of work should have a driving concept behind it. I started off with small projects to help support the work loads of the Senior Art Directors. Here are a couple pieces from that era: simple thank you cards which were included in a larger fulfillment package. The first is a simple and clean visual solution. The second is a bit more cerebral, speaking from my geeky side. Both are among my first steps on the long journey of conceptual thinking in advertising.

Presario Options Catalog

As I gained more skills I worked on bigger projects. This Compaq Presario Catalog was a first in many ways for me. It was my first big project, a 16 page catalog, and it was the first time I ever directed a photoshoot and ran a press check.
